Sig9 IRC Channel for Windows Users

Sig9 has recently put up an IRC channel on Freenode. This is a simple tutorial to help newbie IRC users connect to our channel using a popular Windows client: mIRC.

This is a short, simple tutorial, and very well illustrated.

To learn more about our IRC initiative, visit Sig9 IRC.

First off: the dope for people who do not need such an explanation:

The channels are #sig9 and #sig9-talk at Freenode, irc.freenode.net.

A detailed explanation follows:

  1. Download the latest version of Mirc from the mIRC homepage. As of this writing, it is version 6.16.

  2. Step 1 for connecting to the Sig9 IRC Channel

At the first run of mIRC, you'll be presented with the mIRC options dialog. Fill in the values accordingly. Uncheck invisble mode to follow good netiquette.

  3. Step 2 for connecting to the Sig9 IRC Channel

Switch to the servers tab, and choose "Freenode: Random server" from the IRC Server drop down box.

  4. Step 3 for connecting to the Sig9 IRC Channel

    Click the connect toolbar icon.

  5. Step 4 for connecting to the Sig9 IRC Channel

Once you've connected, cancel the favorites dialog box, and type in "/join #sig9" in the console window.

  6. Step 5 for connecting to the Sig9 IRC Channel

You've now connected to the Sig9 IRC channel #sig9 on freenode. Hopefully, the channel will be busier than in the picture :-D

  7. That's it! Happy IRC-ing. Post any doubts in these comments and I'll try my best to help.
